Artwork Cut Lines

What the Artwork Cut Lines session covers

This training is for teams that need print-and-cut work to land where it should, whether you are producing stickers, labels, decals or short-run signage. We show your operators how to prepare artwork so the cutter reads the file cleanly, follows the correct path and returns accurate results on each run.

The session covers vector preparation, cut line naming, spot colour setup, registration marks, file checks before output and common layout mistakes that cost time on press. We also show how to keep artwork practical for busy production runs, especially when a job needs to be repeated later with the same setup.

  • Print file setup for contour cutting
  • Cut path creation and line control
  • Registration mark placement and spacing
  • Artwork checks before sending to production
  • Simple handover notes for repeat jobs

How the training is run on your floor

We start by looking at the jobs you actually produce, not a generic sample file. That means your artwork, your media sizes and your cutter model are used during the session so the learning is practical from the start. If your team works on laminated prints, clear vinyl, or synthetic label stock, we adjust the examples accordingly.

The process usually begins with a file review, followed by a live setup of cut lines and marks. We then move into a test print and cut cycle, checking registration, blade alignment and output quality. If your operator is working under load-shedding pressure or splitting shifts, we also cover shutdown and restart habits so settings are not lost between runs.

  • Initial review of current artwork files
  • Live demonstration of cut line setup
  • Test run with registration calibration
  • Correction of problem areas on the spot
  • Handover notes for future jobs

What is included in the service

Artwork Cut Lines includes hands-on instruction, practical file correction advice and production guidance for staff who need to keep jobs moving without guesswork. The aim is to reduce reprints, mis-cuts and wasted media. On average, one poorly set contour file can cost far more in vinyl and labour than the training itself, so the session focuses on preventing those errors early.

We can work with one operator or a small production group. For larger teams in Johannesburg, Midrand, Germiston or Boksburg, we can structure the training so each person gets a turn at setup, marking and output checks. That way the knowledge sits with the people who actually run the cutter day to day.

  • Operator tuition for file prep and output order
  • Registration mark placement and verification
  • Blade pressure basics for common media types
  • Cut path checks for open and closed shapes
  • Practical troubleshooting for typical errors

Typical turnaround and session length

Most sessions can be arranged within a short booking window, depending on site access and whether your files are ready for review. A focused induction normally runs for half a day, while a more detailed coaching session with several file types may take a full day. Remote refresher support is also available when your team just needs a quick reset on the process.

In Isando and nearby support areas such as Sandton, Randburg and Midrand, we can often fit in a faster visit if the production schedule allows. For cutter installs nationwide, lead time depends on travel and whether the machine needs a full calibration after delivery. We keep scheduling straightforward, and we dont overbook the day so the training stays useful.

  • Half day for core artwork cut line setup
  • Full day for multiple file types and supervised practice
  • Remote refresher for follow-up questions
  • Nationwide install-linked training where needed

Pricing approach for businesses and print teams

Pricing is based on the number of operators, the type of equipment being used and whether the session is on site or remote. If your team only needs one specific area covered, such as registration marks or cut path creation, the cost is kept to that scope instead of billing for a full training package. That keeps the spend practical for smaller shops and growing production rooms.

We also quote differently for first-time setup versus refresher work. A new team with several files to correct will need more time than a crew that simply wants a process check before a busy season. For larger operations, we can include supervisor coaching so the person managing output knows what to inspect before a job goes to cut.

  • Quoted by scope, site and number of staff
  • Separate rates for initial setup and refresher visits
  • Optional supervisor coaching and workflow notes
  • Travel factored in for out of area sites

Maintenance intervals and file quality checks

Good artwork practice is not a once-off task. We suggest a basic file and cutter review every 4 to 6 weeks for busy shops, or after any major media change, blade change or software update. Coastal humidity can affect media handling and adhesive behaviour, while dust and heat in workshop areas can shift how a roll feeds. Small checks at the right interval save a lot of rework.

During maintenance sessions we look at blade pressure, registration accuracy, media loading, pinch roller condition and the condition of cut paths in saved files. If the same job starts drifting, the issue is often in the artwork setup rather than the machine itself. We teach teams how to spot that difference early, before the cutter starts wasting vinyl or missing corners.

  • Review every 4 to 6 weeks for active production lines
  • Recheck after blade, media or software changes
  • Inspect saved templates for drift or scaling errors
  • Confirm marks and paths before repeat runs

Local support from Isando and beyond

Contour Cutting is based in Isando, Johannesburg, with support coverage across Sandton, Midrand, Germiston, Boksburg and Randburg. That local base helps when a team needs fast help on a live job, but we also travel for cutter installs and training at sites around South Africa. Whether you are running a sign shop, print room or promotional production line, the same practical standard applies: clean files, correct marks and repeatable output.

Our team includes operations, production, technical support and installation staff, so the session is not just theory. It is delivered by people who work with cutters and print jobs every day. If you need to tighten up artwork preparation for reliable contour work, this is where we start. It saves time, and it keeps the cut where it should be.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What do you need from us before the session?

We need a few current artwork files, details of your cutter model and a short note on the media you use most often. If possible, send the problem file before the visit so we can review it first.

Can you train more than one operator at a time?

Yes. We can train a single operator, a small team or a supervisor group, depending on how your production is structured. Larger teams may need a longer session so each person gets hands-on time.

Do you only cover one cutter type?

No. The training focuses on the artwork setup and production process, so it can be adapted to different print-and-cut systems and media types. We adjust the session to the machine and the job.
